OsmAnd imports GPX files on iPhone and Android, so a Google Maps list takes two steps: convert it to GPX in the converter above, then open the file in OsmAnd. Your places arrive as waypoints, saved in the Import folder under My Places → Tracks.
Get the file onto your phone first, through AirDrop, email, a cloud drive like Google Drive or Dropbox, or your Downloads folder. The steps below come from OsmAnd's own documentation. We haven't run them ourselves yet, so where this page says OsmAnd documents something, that's OsmAnd's guide, not our own test.
Import on Android
Tap the GPX file in your file manager, email, a messaging app, or Google Drive, and choose Open in OsmAnd. OsmAnd saves it in the Import folder under My Places → Tracks.
To import from inside the app, open Menu → My Places → Tracks. Tap the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner, choose Import, and pick your GPX file.
Android has one more route. OsmAnd documents that a GPX file placed in its own folder, osmand/tracks/ or a subfolder inside it, is imported automatically, without restarting the app.
Import on iPhone
Open the GPX file from Files, Mail, or wherever it landed, and choose OsmAnd as the app to open it. OsmAnd documents that the file is then available inside the app.
You can also start in OsmAnd: open Menu → My Places → Tracks, tap the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner, choose Import, and pick the file.
Where your places show up
The GPX file from MapsLinkQuest holds your places as waypoints, with no track line between them. OsmAnd lists them in the Points tab of the imported track. They show on the map when that track is shown on the map, and the pin icon next to a waypoint in the list centers the map on it.
Each waypoint carries the place name. Notes and the address go in the GPX description field. We haven't checked how OsmAnd displays them.
If you'd rather keep the places as Favorites, OsmAnd documents a way to copy them across. In the Points tab, open the group's three-dot menu and choose Add to favorites, then pick Copy as new folder or Add to a folder. Copy as new folder gives the list its own Favorites folder.
Importing more than one list
If you keep separate Google Maps lists for different trips, convert each one here. You get one GPX file per list, and each imports on its own. The three-dot menu in the Tracks tab also has Add new folder, which OsmAnd documents for sorting tracks into categories, so one folder per trip keeps things tidy. On Android, copying several GPX files into osmand/tracks/ imports them all. We haven't tested more than one MapsLinkQuest export at a time.
If the import doesn't work
- Wrong format. OsmAnd documents import for GPX, KML and KMZ, and converts KML and KMZ to GPX. MapsLinkQuest exports GPX and KML, so use either. GeoJSON and CSV aren't on OsmAnd's list.
- Tapping the file did nothing. Use the in-app route instead: Menu → My Places → Tracks, the three-dot menu, then Import.
- The pins don't show on the map. Show the imported track on the map, or open its Points tab and tap the pin icon next to a waypoint.
- The pins sit on a blank map. Your waypoints and OsmAnd's offline maps are separate. Download the map region, as below.
- Only 25 places came through. The free tier converts up to 25 places per list. Longer lists need a paid tier.
Before you go offline
OsmAnd draws your waypoints on top of its own offline maps. Download the map region for your trip from Menu → Maps & Resources while you still have signal. OsmAnd's free version allows 7 map downloads on Android and 5 on iPhone, and an update counts as a download.
